Nonimmigrant Visas in Virginia

Immigrant vs. Nonimmigrant Visas

The United States immigration system offers dozens of different types of visas that make it possible for foreign nationals to travel from abroad for the purposes of working, studying or vacationing in this country. All of them, however, can be divided up into two categories: immigrant visas and nonimmigrant visas. The former are intended for people who are coming to the U.S. with the goal of obtaining green cards to take up permanent residence and to eventually become naturalized citizens. The latter are for individuals who only need to come to this country for a limited period of time.

Common types of nonimmigrant visas include:

People with nonimmigrant visas are limited in terms of the duration of stay permitted, whether the individual can seek education or employment, and what types of employment are permitted. When you contact Fayad Law, P.C. for an initial consultation with a Virginia immigration attorney from our team, we will take the time to fully discuss your reasons for coming to the United States in order to help you select the most appropriate type of visa to meet your needs. We assist clients in person at or our offices in Fairfax and Richmond, VA; we also work with foreign nationals abroad.

B Category Visitor Visas

Two of the most common types of nonimmigrant visas are the B-1 and B-2 visitor visas. The B-1 visa is for individuals who need to come to the U.S. for business purposes such as to consult with associates, negotiate a contract, or attend a convention or conference, whereas the B-2 visa is for tourists and people who want to visit with friends or relatives, among other things. Out of the 53,082,286 nonimmigrant visas that the Department of Homeland Security reported processing in 2011, more than half (26,862,070) were either B-1 or B-2 visas.
